Challenge:
Massive oil spill in the Golf of Mexico due to ruptured pipe. After a few failed attempts to seal the well, an ROV driller was deployed to repair the pipe. The ROV driller needed to install a new blowout preventer to pump in heavy mud to kill the well. There were 10 individual PCBs that required encapsulation to be protected against the harsh environment. The electronic components need to sustain 2,280 PSI (pressure 1 mile below sea level) for 3 days, resist salt water, hydrocarbon, low temperatures and mechanical stress. Furthermore, the robot needed to be flexible, and a fast prototyping was required.
Solution:
TECHNOMELT PA 673 provides an excellent environmental resistance and protects the sensitive PCB components of the ROV driller against high pressure, salt and mechanical stress. It has the best low temperature flexibility and chemical resistance performance. With low pressure molding a fast turnaround was achieved and met the needs of the urgent situation.
