Have you been enjoying the action at the Beijing Winter Olympics? Those dramatic events would not be possible without safe, high quality Olympic venues. This year, many of the venues have also used exciting new techniques to be greener too – and Henkel adhesives have played a role behind the scenes to make this possible. Discover how…!
The Winter Olympics is an incredible showcase for the very best winter sports action and it’s easy to see how the feats of athleticism on show are getting people excited. However, it’s also hard to ignore the stunning Olympic venues: the National Sliding Center, the National Speed Skating Oval, the National Alpine Skiing Center, to name just a few. And these venues are special for another reason: To make this year’s Winter Olympics more sustainable, the organizers adopted rigorous criteria to selecting quality sustainable building materials to build greener venues. As a leading provider of certified solutions for structural adhesives, Henkel provided sustainable engineered wood adhesives for the National Sliding Center – one of the Winter Olympics’ iconic venues.
Located in Yanqing, Beijing, the National Sliding Center winds across a hillside like a flying snow dragon. It is one of the core projects for Beijing Winter Olympics and China's first racing track for bobsledding and tobogganing. This project has been planned and built as a steel and wood structure because of special natural factors such as climate and terrain. Glue laminated timber (GLT) is used for the wood part of the structure.
