LOCTITE® 272

Features and Benefits

A red, high strength, medium viscosity, anaerobic-curing threadlocking adhesive with high temperature resistance.
LOCTITE® 272 is a red, medium viscosity, high strength anaerobic-curing threadlocking adhesive with high temperature resistance. It is specially designed for the permanent locking and sealing of threaded fasteners and to withstand temperatures up to 232°C (450°F). The anaerobic adhesive cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces, and prevents loosening and leakage from shock and vibration. Ideal for the locking and sealing of large bolts and studs.
  • Medium viscosity
  • High temperature resistance to 232°C (450°F)
  • Resists shock and vibration
  • Seals threads - allows through-hole tapping
  • High strength

How to

Step by Step Guide

1. Preparation - Cleaning

It is recommended to use LOCTITE® SF 7070 to degrease and clean surfaces prior to applying LOCTITE 272 threadlocker.

2. Preparation - Activation

If cure speed is too slow due to passive metals (stainless steel, aluminum and plated metals) or low temperature (below 5°C), use activator LOCTITE® SF 7649 (see cure speed vs activator graph in the TDS).

3. Application

Apply liquid threadlocker to the engagement area. For manual dispensing, the use of a peristaltic handgun or the LOCTITE® Pro Pump is recommended to ensure a consistent application volume.

4a. Application - Through-Hole

Insert bolt and apply threadlocker to the exposed thread. Assemble nut and tighten to the correct/specified torque.

4b. Application - Blind Hole

Apply several drops of liquid threadlocker down the sides of the blind hole filling the lower third. Apply several drops to the bolt.

5. Assembly

Assemble and tighten. If several bolts are being assembled, torque them down to the correct value within the fixture.

6. Disassembly - Hand Tools

Disassemble with standard hand tools.

7a. Disassembly - Heat

If disassembly is not possible using normal hand tools, apply localized heat to approximately 250°C. Disassemble while hot.

7b. Disassembly After Heating - Hand Tools

Disassemble while hot with standard hand tools.

Hint

For the disassembly of corroded or seized parts, use LOCTITE® LB 8040 Freeze and Release.
