Automotive Gasketing Solutions

Formed-in-place and cured-in-place sealant solutions to ensure intact and leak-free seals and resistance to high temperatures, pressure, and vibrations.

With an established global infrastructure, design, and engineering capabilities backed by an extensive network of engineers and an integrated communication network, our team at Henkel delivers a comprehensive and innovative range of automotive gaskets and sealant solutions.

Automotive gasket sealants prevent leakage of fluids or gases by completely filling the space between the flange surfaces. To ensure the seal remains intact and leak-free, the gasket needs to be resistant to the fluid or gas it is sealing. Automotive gasketing must also withstand the joint’s service temperature, pressure, and any micromovement.

Liquid, formed-in-place (FIP) automotive sealing solutions provide car designers and manufacturers with a much better alternative to solid gaskets for automotive systems. Our automotive gasketing solutions provide total contact between the two faces, and a durable seal for all types of flange geometries. They can also add structural strength. Additionally, our portfolio of automotive foam gasket materials eliminates the extreme compressive loading needed by traditional gaskets and seals surface imperfections.

Henkel’s Automotive Gasketing Solutions

Automotive manufacturers face numerous challenges when it comes to automotive sealing solutions. These include increased product durability and performance, lower emissions, and improve cost management. Henkel provides high-performance automotive gasketing systems to meet all of these challenges and has a broad portfolio of breakthrough technologies that enable our customers to meet the fast design changes and the development of automotive specific solutions.

Henkel provides the following automotive gasket material types which include UV curing options:

  • Polyacrylate
  • Silicone
  • Anaerobic
  • Epoxy

Henkel’s range of automotive gasket sealant solutions include Formed-in-Place gaskets (FIPG), Cured in Place gaskets (CIPG), Formed-in-Place Foamed Gaskets (FIPFG), and Mold in Place gaskets (MIPG).

FIPG

Formed-in-Place (FIP) gaskets are applied as a liquid sealant to one of the flange surfaces before the parts are assembled. After assembly, the FIP gasket spreads and cures between the flanges, filling gaps, scratches, and surface irregularities to provide complete and durable seal that will prevent leaks and protect against dirt and moisture. Using FIP automotive gasket sealants can shorten lead times since this process does not require compression and offers fast curing times and a reliable seal.

CIPG

Cured-in-Place (CIP) gaskets are liquids that are applied by machines. These machines dispense the gasket material in precise beads to one of the flanges. The automotive gasket sealant is cured by ultraviolet (UV) light to form an elastomeric material with adhesion to the flange surface. Sealing is achieved through compression of the cured gasket during flange assembly.

FIPFG

Formed-in-Place Foamed (FIPF) gaskets are applied as a liquid and then expand to a closed cell or mixed cell foam before chemically curing. After only a few minutes at room temperature, a soft, seamlessly closed foam seal has formed. In contrast to an inserted sealing bead or sponge rubber seal, there is no seam through which, for example, moisture can penetrate the component. The FIPFG foam seal adapts to any workpiece geometry and compensates for dimensional tolerances. The coupling points of the sealing bead ends are almost completely invisible. Due to the high level of impermeability offered by the foam gasket, which is compressed during assembly, it reliably seals against moisture, water spray, dust, and other environmental influences.

Automotive Gasketing Application Areas

Henkel’s innovative and high performance automotive gasketing solutions have been specifically designed to meet the demands of the automotive industry. With continually evolving regulations and standards, as well as higher demands for sustainable and light-weight materials, Henkel provides cutting-edge and innovative solutions for automotive gaskets and sealant applications, including:

  • Engine Systems
  • Transmission Systems
  • Exhaust Systems
  • Pump Systems

Engine Systems

Henkel’s automotive engine sealants product portfolio helps to ensure high dependability and prevent fluid leaks. This includes anaerobic-, polyacrylate- and silicone-based engine sealants that are developed specially for automotive applications. Our automotive engine sealants are designed for high temperatures and high stress applications making them reliable solutions to prevent fluid leaks.

Transmission Systems

Broken seals and leaking fluids in transmissions can cause major mechanical issues. Solid gaskets are commonly used to seal transmission systems. However, they can be difficult to position and often require manual application. Henkel’s transmission gasket sealant solutions offer excellent adhesion to plastic and metal, higher flexibility, and better oil resistance for a durable and long-lasting seal while also improving productivity goals and reducing overall costs.

Exhaust Systems

LOCTITE exhaust system gaskets can withstand high temperatures as well as high humidity levels and can be used for sealing the cold side of turbochargers or lambda sensors.  Henkel’s advanced range of automotive gaskets and sealants offer high temperature resistance and high adhesion to metal substrates, providing increased resistance to permeation.

Pump Systems

Pump systems circulate liquids or gasses to the required areas of the car. Poor or damaged seals can cause significant damage to the engine. For this reason, strong and durable automotive gaskets and sealants are needed to securely seal gaps and flanges. Henkel’s high-performance gasketing solutions offer very good oil and water glycol resistance as well as excellent adhesion to plastic and metal substrates.
