Electric motors are subject to a wide range of challenging conditions, including heavy vibrations, rapid temperature changes, moisture and automotive fluids. To optimize e-drive performance, the stator coils can be protected by encapsulating them using a potting technology. The material used should deeply penetrate the coils to ensure all spaces are filled and there are no remaining voids, minimizing the risk of performance issues.
In need of a reliable potting solution for the stator in its new hybrid electric motor, a leading Tier 1 supplier partnered up with Henkel to develop a suitable potting material for its application. In addition to the abovementioned requirements, the solution also had to optimize the application process by removing the need for vacuum de-airing before dispensing. Working closely together with the customer, Henkel developed LOCTITE® PE 1000LV, a reliable potting material that enables an approximate time saving of 40 minutes to one hour per shift. It is currently being used by the Tier 1 Supplier to produce over 100,000 electric motors annually.
