Battery systems are the most valuable part of an electric vehicle (EV), making it imperative to safely protect all components within against external environmental factors such as dust, moist, and water ingress. Failure to securely seal the battery pack could therefore lead to EV reliability issues, enhancing battery lifetime cost. At the same time, battery packs need to be easily serviceable for repair and maintenance. The implication for the gasketing technology used to close the battery pack is that it should not only provide a tight seal, but also be easily reopenable with low force.
When a large automotive OEM sought a reliable yet serviceable gasketing material for its new EV battery pack design, it was able to rely on Henkel’s broad portfolio to meet its short prototyping and validation process timeline. Within three months, Henkel delivered a gasketing solution – LOCTITE® ESB 5100 – that allows for battery pack serviceability and can be used in a large-scale production set-up. The material is now used by the OEM to securely seal more than 100,000 battery packs a year, making it a proven solution for EV battery pack gasketing.
