TEROSON® EP 5055

Features and Benefits

A solvent-free, high-strength, epoxy based panel bonder that provides corrosion protection, while improving body stiffness and NVH properties, for extended vehicle lifetime and driving comfort.
TEROSON® EP 5055 is a black (part A) and gray-green (part B) epoxy-based adhesive designed for high-strength structural bonding and corrosion-protection of bare steel, zinc-coated steels and aluminum alloys used in the automotive industry and body repair shops. It’s particularly ideal for roof and panel bonding. The mixed compound has a ~80-minute processing time (23°C/73°F, 50% rh) and it reaches its initial strength (0,1MPa) in ~7h at 23°C (73°F). Full cure occurs at room temperature in 48 hours; curing can be accelerated via infrared heat at 60°C (140°F) for 1 hour or 80°C (176°F) for 30 minutes. For application, please use a pneumatic or manual, dual cartridge dispenser, e.g. LOCTITE® HD14 Handheld Pneumatic Dual Cartridge Dispenser (200ml, item 2693824) or LOCTITE® HD14 Handheld Manual Dual Cartridge Dispenser (200ml, item 2693822). Before application, surface pretreatment with TEROSON® VR 10 is recommended.
  • OEM approved
  • Excellent corrosion prevention
  • Adheres to a wide range of materials (without primer) such as aluminum, steel and sheet molding compounds
  • Can be spot-welded (if not solidified)
  • Provides body stiffness, primarily for NVH purposes & weld reduction
  • Easy preparation and application

How to

Step by Step Guide

1. Cleaning

Bonding surfaces must be free of oil, grease, dust, or any other contaminant. Clean bonding surfaces with any solvent base cleaner and a lint-free cloth.

2. Prepare surface

Remove old adhesive from existing body parts to make sure they are back to bare metal and free of any contamination.

3. Pretreat surface

Both bonding surfaces must be cleaned again to remove grinding dust. Pretreat bonding surfaces with any solvent base cleaner. Allow the prepared surfaces to dry for approximately 5 minutes.

4. Prepare cartridge

Unscrew the coupling ring and remove the cap from TEROSON® EP 5055 cartridge. Before attaching the static mixer to the cartridge, squeeze out a small amount of material until both adhesive components run equally. This is necessary to achieve a good mix of the two components.

5. Attach mixer and insert cartridge

Attach the static mixer and fix it with the coupling ring. Insert the cartridge into the application dispenser.

6. Prepare adhesive

When mixed, TEROSON® EP 5055 is very dark grey in color (almost black). Discard first 5 cm of adhesive.

7. Apply and spread adhesive

Apply and spread TEROSON® EP 5055 with a spreader or brush. All bare metal areas should be covered with adhesive for corrosion protection. TEROSON® EP 5055 can be used on steel and aluminum panels and as part of the preparation. With new panels, the ‘e coat’ must be removed from the bonded area and adhesive applied and spread to cover the bare metal.

8. Working time

Open time for mixed adhesive (at normal room temperature of 23°C/73°F) is approximately 80 minutes. It may be necessary to change the static mixer if no material has been passed through it in over 30 minutes.

9. Remove excess adhesive

Remove excess adhesive immediately with spatula or cloth using any solvent-base cleaner. Cured adhesive can only be removed mechanically.

10. Assemble components

Join and fix components within the 80 minutes processing time. If spot welding is required, it must be carried out during this initial period. Do not subject bonded parts to stress before final cure.

11. Curing time

The adhesive cures at room temperature - initial strength approximately 4 hours at 23°C/73°F; final strength approximately 48 hours at 23°C. Curing time can be accelerated using common tools like infrared or heating pads -full strength in 60 minutes at 65°C/149°F or 30 minutes at 100°C/212°F. During the curing phase, avoid movement or stress until the product is fully cured.

12. Painting

When initial bond strength has been reached, bonded parts can be painted.

13. Disposal of TEROSON EP 5055

Cured product and empty cartridges are disposed of as normal waste. Uncured material has to be disposed of as hazardous waste. See Safety Data Sheet for more details.
